A Job for Luke

Luke and Emma help in the school garden. Mr Cole gives them a job. “Please water these new plants,” he says. Luke gets a watering can.

Luke fills the can at the tap. He tries to lift it. “It is too heavy,” he says. “I cannot carry it to the plants.”

Emma looks at the can. “We could put less water in it,” she says. Luke pours some water into a bucket. He lifts the can again.

“That is better,” says Luke. He carries the can to the plants. Emma points to the dry soil. Luke pours the water slowly.

The can is empty. Some plants still need water. Luke fills the can halfway. Emma carries a small can beside him. They make one more trip.

Mr Cole looks at the plants. “You worked well together,” he says. Luke sets down his can. “We found a way,” he says. Emma smiles.
