A Sign for the Pond
School Readers · Level 12
Charlotte and Samuel visit the school pond with their teacher. A duck is sitting near the water. Samuel moves closer, and the duck steps away. “It needs some space,” says their teacher.

Charlotte notices muddy footprints right beside the nest. “People may not know where to stand,” she says. Samuel suggests a sign near the path. Their teacher agrees to help them make one.

They draw a duck and a nest on a board. Charlotte writes a short message asking people to stay on the path. Samuel chooses a place for it, but a tall plant hides the board.

They carry the sign to the bend in the path. Now people can see it before they reach the pond. Their teacher fixes it to a low post. The students stand back and check the view.

Later, two students stop at the sign. They look at the duck from the path without going near its nest. The duck stays beside the water. Charlotte gives Samuel a quiet smile.

“A sign only helps if people can see it,” says Samuel. Charlotte nods. “And if they understand it.” They watch the duck for a while, then leave it in peace.
