Amelia’s Welcome
Shared Reading Books · Social Science · Year 1
A new child stands by the classroom door. His name is Leo. He holds his red bag tightly. Amelia wonders what their classroom looks like to someone new.

“Would you like to see our building blocks?” she asks. Leo looks at the busy room but does not move. Mrs Kent says, “We can give him time.”

Amelia remembers her first school day. She did not know where anything was either. “Perhaps pictures could help,” she says. She finds some card and crayons.

She draws the reading rug, the blocks and the playground slide. Then she shows Leo the pictures. “You can point to a place you would like to see.”

Leo points to the reading rug. They walk there with Mrs Kent. Amelia sits nearby while Leo looks through a book. He begins to loosen his grip on his bag.

Later, Leo draws a dog beside Amelia’s pictures. “I like dogs,” he says. “So do I,” says Amelia. They find a dog book on the shelf.

At playtime, Leo points to the picture of the slide. “Will you come too?” he asks. Amelia nods, and they go outside with their class.

They put the picture card by the classroom door. “It can help our next new friend,” says Amelia. Leo adds a little drawing of their classroom book corner.
