Annie’s Desk Tray
Shared Reading Books · Technology · Year 4
Annie’s group shares a box of classroom stationery. Finding a ruler usually means lifting out pencils, glue sticks and several rubbers. Mrs Hill suggests a tray with separate spaces. Annie sketches an arrangement and starts with empty recycled card boxes.

She fixes every divider in place with tape. The pencils fit neatly, and the glue sticks stand in a row. Then her friend Isaac brings the long rulers. None will lie flat. “I made spaces for what was here,” Annie says, looking at the short compartments.

They measure the available tray space against the actual ruler rather than guessing. Removing one divider makes a long section, but it leaves a loose edge where the tape was. Annie wants an arrangement that can change without being torn apart each time.

Mrs Hill helps prepare broad card slots along two sides of the tray. The dividers can slide into matching slots and be lifted out again. Annie moves one divider to make room for the rulers, then checks that the shorter tools still have their own spaces. “That is a modular design,” Mrs Hill says. “We can rearrange its parts.”

They test the new arrangement during a drawing task. Annie observes whether people can find a tool and put it back without emptying the tray. A tall divider hides the small rubbers, so they lower that section.

Isaac, who uses his left hand for drawing, tries the tray from the other side of the table. The ruler section is easy to reach, but the glue is behind the tallest box. Annie turns that box and asks him to try again.

The group agrees on an arrangement for their next task and takes a picture of it for their own class notes. For painting, they will need a different set of spaces. Mrs Hill reminds them to check stability each time a divider moves.

At tidy-up time, the tray is still together and the rulers lie flat. Annie keeps a few spare broad dividers beneath it. “I thought finished meant fixed forever,” she tells Isaac. “Now we can change the arrangement when the job or the user changes.”
