Anthony’s Bike Basket
School Readers · Level 10
Anthony and Gerald get their bikes ready for a ride through the park. Anthony puts his soft toy frog in the little basket at the front of his red bike.

Anthony turns the handlebars, and the basket leans to one side. The toy frog slips against the edge. Anthony stops before riding down the path.

Gerald notices that one basket strap has come loose. “Your passenger needs a steady seat,” he says. He shows Dad where the basket is moving.

Dad holds the bike still while Anthony lifts the toy frog onto the bench. Together they straighten the basket and fasten the loose strap around the handlebar.

Anthony gently turns the handlebars again to check their repair. The front wheel points first one way, then the other. This time the basket stays level.

He puts the frog back and starts riding slowly beside Gerald. Dad walks with them along the wide path. There is plenty of room to pass other people.

At the pond, they stop on the dry path behind the rail. Anthony shows his toy the water while Gerald watches a real frog resting near the reeds.

Before riding home, Anthony checks the basket strap once more. “Our passenger is ready,” he says. He is pleased they fixed the problem before their journey began.
