Audrey’s Picnic Recipe
School Readers · Level 15
Audrey and Daphne want to make oat biscuits for a garden picnic with Grandma. They find her picture recipe beside a mixing bowl, but a splash of water has made one small part difficult to read.

The girls can see a picture of a cup beside the oats. The number next to it has disappeared. Daphne suggests filling the bowl with oats, while Audrey wonders whether the mixture might become too dry.

Grandma remembers making a second copy for her recipe folder. Audrey fetches the folder from a low shelf and carefully turns the pages until she finds the matching picture of the biscuits.

The dry copy shows two level cups of oats, not a full bowl. Daphne fills a measuring cup. Audrey uses the flat edge of a spoon to sweep the extra oats back into their container.

They take turns measuring the ingredients, then stir the mixture together with Grandma. Audrey checks each picture before they move on, so they do not add the same thing twice or miss a step.

The girls shape small biscuits on a cool baking tray. Grandma puts the tray into the oven. While they wait away from the hot oven, Audrey copies the missing number onto a clean recipe card.

Grandma takes out the biscuits and leaves them on a rack until they are cool enough to handle. The girls count enough for everyone, then carry a plate outside beside their basket of picnic cups.

At the picnic, Daphne gives Grandma the repaired recipe card. “We checked before we guessed,” says Audrey. She enjoys her biscuit, pleased that finding the right amount saved both their mixture and their special afternoon.
