Beatrice’s Shape City
Shared Reading Books · Arts · Year 1
Beatrice and Amir spread a long sheet on the floor. They are making a city from paper shapes. Beatrice chooses red rectangles for tall buildings beside a wide road.

Amir makes a low yellow house with a triangle roof. He sets it near her tallest tower. Beatrice moves the house away. “Our buildings do not match,” she says.

Amir looks at his house. “This is where my story starts,” he says quietly. Beatrice holds the little triangle roof. She had not thought about a story inside the city.

Mrs Wood sits beside the sheet. “What could happen between these places?” she asks. Beatrice looks from the tower to the house. There is a wide empty space between them.

She lays a blue paper strip through that space. Amir turns it towards his front door. “A river?” he asks. “Or a road?” Beatrice thinks. “A river with a bridge.”

They put a broad brown rectangle across the blue. Now someone from the yellow house could cross to the towers. Amir adds a small green park on the other side.

Beatrice tries a circle near the park. It could be a pond or a round playground. She leaves it loose while Amir moves the trees to make a path around it.

Before they glue, they tell a journey through the city. The route works until they reach the bridge. A tree is in the way. Amir slides it aside.

They glue their chosen shapes and press them flat. The finished city has tall towers, a little house, a bridge and a round place where many stories could begin.

“It does not all match,” says Beatrice, smiling. “It all belongs.” Amir points to his yellow house. Tomorrow, they will choose who lives there and take the journey again.
