Blake’s Bicycle Delivery
School Readers · Level 17
Blake and Iris help Mum collect vegetables from the community garden. They promise to take some to the nearby cooking group. Blake brings his bicycle, which has two bags hanging beside the back wheel. The flat shared path makes a gentle route between the two places.

Iris packs the potatoes into one bag and puts a small bunch of carrots in the other. When Blake holds the bicycle upright, it leans towards the potatoes. He does not climb on. “Something feels wrong,” he tells Mum, keeping both feet firmly on the ground.

Mum asks them to compare the bags before they change anything. One holds several heavy potatoes; the other contains only the light carrots. Iris realises that using two bags does not always mean the bicycle is evenly loaded. They set it beside the garden bench.

They divide the potatoes between the two bags and add carrots to each side. Mum helps fasten the bags securely, checking that no strap can reach a wheel. Blake holds the bicycle again. This time it feels much steadier, although the vegetables still make it heavy.

Before leaving, Blake and Iris put on their helmets. Mum suggests walking the bicycle for the first part of the path to check the load. Blake agrees. Iris watches from beside him as the bags remain level and the straps stay clear of the turning wheel.

At a wide empty space, Mum checks that the way is clear. Blake rides a short distance slowly, then stops beside her. The bicycle feels different with vegetables on board, so he leaves extra room to turn and uses both brakes gently when he stops.

They reach the cooking group together and unpack the bags onto a table. A cook thanks them for the fresh vegetables. Iris explains why the potatoes are shared between the bags instead of all being packed on one side, showing how their first plan changed.

On the way home, Blake wheels his lighter bicycle beside Iris and Mum. He is pleased that he noticed the lean before riding away. “Next time we will check the balance first,” he says. Iris nods. Their delivery began with vegetables and ended with a useful discovery.
