Carol’s Puppy Puzzle
School Readers · Level 9
Carol and Diana play with Dad’s puppy in the garden. Carol rolls its blue toy across the grass, and the puppy chases it.

The toy bounces beneath a low bench near the flower pots. The puppy crouches down, but its nose cannot reach far enough.

Diana calls the puppy towards her while Carol looks under the bench. She can see the blue toy behind one of the wooden legs.

“I know where it is,” says Carol, “but I cannot reach it either.” Dad asks the girls to keep the puppy beside them.

He kneels down and gently moves the toy with a short stick. It rolls out onto the grass, where Carol can pick it up.

Carol squeezes the toy, and it makes a little squeak. The puppy lifts its ears and wags its tail at once.

This time, Diana rolls the toy away from the bench. The puppy catches it on the open grass and brings it back.

“That is a better place for our game,” says Carol. They take turns rolling the toy while Dad watches from the garden chair.
