Catherine’s Puppets
School Readers · Level 11
Catherine and Bridget plan a puppet show at the forest picnic table. They hang a cream cloth over the front. Their rabbit and mouse can appear above it.

A gust lifts the curtain while the girls get ready. Everyone can see behind the cloth, and Catherine laughs before pulling it down again.

Bridget holds one corner, but the other corner rises in the next gust. “We cannot hold the curtain and move both puppets,” she says, looking at Dad.

Dad finds two blue clips in their picnic bag. The girls use them to fasten the cloth to the table. They tug it gently to check the grip.

Now the curtain stays in place when the wind blows. Catherine’s rabbit pops up and asks the mouse where it can find a cosy woodland home.

Bridget’s mouse points towards their lunch box. It is a pretend log. The rabbit tries to squeeze inside. Its long ears stick out and make everyone laugh.

The puppets decide to share a larger home behind the curtain. The rabbit and mouse bow together at the end. Dad claps from the bench.

The girls remove the clips and fold the cloth into their bag. “Our stage needed help,” says Catherine, “but our puppets worked out their own problem.”
