Charlotte’s Pond
Shared Reading Books · Science · Year 2
Charlotte remembers the tiny dark tadpoles at Gran’s pond. On her next visit, something looks different. “That one has legs!” she says. Gran stays beside her on the firm path. They can watch the shallow edge without leaning over or entering the water.

They take a wildlife book to a bench. A photograph shows jelly-like frogspawn, with a dark centre in each egg. Gran explains that a frog begins life in an egg. The book helps them connect changes that take much longer than one afternoon.

Over the following weeks, some tadpoles develop small back legs. They still have tails and live in the water. Charlotte makes a fresh drawing on each visit. Not every tadpole changes at exactly the same speed, so she looks carefully rather than expecting a matching set.

Later, a little froglet rests on a gently sloping stone. It has four legs and a tail that is becoming shorter. “It did not grow up in one jump,” says Charlotte. Gran explains that a frog’s body changes gradually as it develops.

A grown frog sits near the damp bank. It can spend time on land as well as near water. Charlotte compares its shape with her earlier drawings. The stages belong to one life cycle, even though a tadpole and an adult frog look very different.

At the table, they arrange pictures of eggs, a tadpole, a froglet and an adult frog. Charlotte notices a missing stage in her own drawings. She uses the book to fill the gap, marking that she learned this part from a picture rather than a visit.

The pond has plants and a gentle route to the bank. These places provide shelter and help young frogs leave the water. Gran keeps the habitat undisturbed. They leave the animals and frogspawn where they are. “Not every egg will grow into an adult frog,” Gran explains.

Another visit brings another surprise. Charlotte spots a change she had missed before. “My pond is full of growing stories,” she says. She closes the book and watches quietly with Gran. Careful looking has made a familiar place feel new again.
