Clarissa’s Market Mix
School Readers · Level 20
Clarissa and Felix visit the Saturday market with Mum. They have promised to choose vegetables for a family soup, and Clarissa carries the list in a small cloth bag. She enjoys the busy stalls so much that she begins picking bright peppers before checking what the family already has waiting in the kitchen at home.

Mum asks the children to compare the list with a note from Dad. They already have onions, potatoes and one large carrot. The list asks for something green and something that will soften into the soup. Felix chooses a cabbage, while Clarissa points to a basket of firm orange vegetables that look just like carrots.

The stallholder explains that they are squash with smooth skins, not carrots. Clarissa laughs at her mistake, then admits that she does not know whether the family would like them. The stallholder describes how they taste when cooked and shows her a cut piece that makes their pale orange flesh easier to see.

Felix suggests taking the biggest one, because more soup must be better. Mum reminds him that they need enough for their meal, not enough to fill every bowl in the street. They choose a smaller squash and check that everyone at home can eat the ingredients. Clarissa adds it to their list rather than trying to remember the whole plan.

At the next stall, a basket of apples tips as a customer moves a bag. One apple rolls towards Clarissa’s feet. She picks it up and reaches for her own cloth bag, then stops. Their vegetables and the market’s loose fruit could easily get mixed together if she puts everything in the nearest convenient place.

She returns the apple to the stallholder, who checks it before setting it aside. Felix helps hold the basket steady while the customer collects the others. The short delay means they miss the front of the queue at the bread stall, but Mum says they still have plenty of time to finish their shopping calmly.

At home, Dad has set the vegetables on a cool worktop. The children show him the squash and explain why they chose its size. Mum handles the cutting and hot pan while Clarissa washes the cabbage leaves and Felix checks off the list. The soup begins with a colour Clarissa had expected and a vegetable she had not recognised.

When they sit down to eat, Felix asks whether the recipe should say “market mix”. Clarissa writes the name at the top of their list, then adds a small drawing of the squash. Next time she visits the stall, she will know what it is. There will still be plenty of other things to ask about.
