Daisy’s Bowling Plan
School Readers · Level 16
Daisy is at the bowling centre with her school group. Kevin is choosing a ball, and Mr Morris is helping everyone get ready. Daisy has bowled before, but she has not been to this centre. She studies the lane and listens to the balls rolling towards the pins.

On her first turn, Daisy holds the blue ball with both hands. She steps forward and lets it go, but it rolls only a short way before slowing down. Daisy watches it reach the side. “I thought I could send it farther than that,” she says.

Kevin tells her she can try again when her next turn comes. Daisy looks at the people waiting and wishes she had practised more. Mr Morris asks whether she wants to try a lighter ball or use the bowling ramp beside their seats. Both are choices she can make.

Daisy decides to try the ramp first. Mr Morris helps her put it in place, and Kevin brings the blue ball. Daisy checks where the ramp is pointing before she rolls the ball down it. This time, the ball travels much farther along the lane.

It misses most of the pins, but Daisy has noticed something useful. The ramp was pointing a little to one side. On her next turn, she asks Mr Morris to help adjust it. Kevin waits while she looks down the lane and chooses where she wants to aim.

The next ball knocks several pins down. Daisy smiles, but she is interested in more than the score now. She wants to see whether the small change helped. She tells Kevin where she aimed and watches what happens when he takes his own turn.

Later, Mr Morris offers her the lighter ball again. Daisy tries one turn with it, then chooses the ramp for the rest of the game. Kevin does not have to make the same choice. They can play together while using different ways to send the ball.

When the game ends, Daisy helps return the equipment. She has not won every round, and that no longer seems important. She found a way to take part, make choices and improve her aim. Next time, she will know what she wants to try first.
