Edward’s Model Lift
Shared Reading Books · Technology · Year 3
Edward makes a toy harbour on a low shelf of blocks inside his play tray. His toy boat brings a large parcel, but the harbour platform is above it. “I need a little lift,” he says. Mum brings clean card and broad cloth strips.

They fold a shallow basket from card and tape short broad handles to opposite sides. Edward sets the toy parcel near one edge. When Mum lifts the handles a little, the basket tilts and the parcel slides towards the lower corner.

Edward puts the basket down in the tray. “The parcel is making one side heavier,” he says. He moves it to the middle and spreads the handles apart. They agree to test only just above the tray, where a dropped parcel cannot fall far.

The balanced basket stays more level, but the taped handle pulls away from the thin card. Mum stops the lift. Edward notices that the card bends where the handle joins it. Moving the parcel has not strengthened those fixing points.

Mum reinforces the sides with broad extra card patches and secures the short cloth handles through adult-prepared slots. She checks every edge and connection. Edward keeps his hands clear while she finishes, then places the same toy parcel in the middle.

They lift the basket a short distance above the tray again. Its sides stay firm, and both handles remain attached. Edward checks the card around the slots after lowering it. There are no new tears, but they will still inspect it before each game.

His friend Alex tries the model delivery. He needs both handles together to keep the basket level. Edward shows him where the parcel goes and asks if anything is awkward. Alex suggests leaving a clear landing place on the harbour platform.

The toy boat makes another trip. Alex lowers the basket onto the clear platform while Edward guides the boat. Afterwards, they put the model lift away. “Balance, strong joins and somewhere to land,” Edward says. “We needed all three.”
