Elaine’s Team Banner
School Readers · Level 12
Elaine and Iris paint a blue wave on a cream banner for their school team. They spread the cloth across the outdoor art table. Their teacher keeps the paint pots nearby.

A breeze lifts one corner before the wave has dried. Elaine catches it carefully. A fold touches the wet paint and leaves a small blue mark beside the wave.

Iris wants to wipe the mark away at once. The teacher asks her to pause. Rubbing wet paint could spread it farther across the pale cloth. The mark might not disappear.

They move the banner to a table beneath the covered entrance. The teacher brings two wooden clips. The girls fasten the corners. The cloth stays flat while it dries.

Elaine adds a little curved line from the stray mark to the wave. Iris watches the spot become a small splash. It belongs in their water picture now.

When the paint is dry, they remove the clips and lift the banner together. They carry it towards their waiting team. The blue wave and its new splash show clearly.

Their friends ask about the extra splash, and Elaine explains what happened in the breeze. Iris smiles because their team picture now has a story of its own to tell.

After the game, they fold the dry banner and put it in the team cupboard. “We did not need to start again,” says Elaine. “We needed time to think of another way.”
