Elizabeth’s Friday Plan
Shared Reading Books · Social Stories · Ages 9–12
Elizabeth has put her overnight bag beside the sofa. She and Charlotte planned a Friday sleepover, with a film and breakfast pancakes. In the afternoon, Dad receives a call: Charlotte is unwell, and the visit cannot happen. The bag stays where Elizabeth carefully packed it.

Elizabeth sits beside it, feeling angry and sad at the same time. She knows Charlotte did not choose to be ill, but knowing that does not remove the disappointment. Dad listens while she describes the parts of the evening she had been looking forward to.

He does not offer a new date before speaking with Charlotte’s family. Elizabeth can leave the bag packed for now or unpack later. She chooses to leave it while they have a drink. There is no need to solve every part of Friday before she has had time to take in the news.

When she is ready, Dad offers a few possible plans at home. Elizabeth chooses drawing at the covered garden table rather than the film they had planned for two. She makes a small comic about a traveller whose carefully drawn map is changed by the weather.

Later, she asks if she can send Charlotte a short get-well message through their families. Dad helps her check that it does not ask Charlotte to reply while she is resting. Elizabeth saves the comic to show her another day, if they both want to.

By bedtime, Elizabeth feels more settled, though Friday was not the evening she wanted. She can care about Charlotte and still feel disappointed. Drawing did not replace the friendship. It gave her something else to do that particular evening while the next visit remained undecided.
