Elizabeth’s Leaf Book
School Readers · Level 9
Elizabeth and Janet collect fallen leaves in the school garden. They choose different shapes for a book to share with their class.

Elizabeth finds a bright red leaf with pointed edges. She places it between two blank pages to keep it flat.

On the bench, Janet opens the book to arrange their collection. The red leaf is missing from the page where Elizabeth expects it.

They search beneath the bench and beside their shoes. A breeze moves the leaves on the ground, but none of them is bright red.

Their teacher asks what happened before they sat down. “I put it inside the book,” Elizabeth remembers.

They turn the pages slowly, holding the book flat on the bench. The red leaf is tucked near the back, safe between two pages.

Janet keeps the book open while Elizabeth adds the red leaf to their display. They glue each leaf down carefully, leaving its shape easy to see.

Back in class, the girls show their finished collection. Elizabeth tells everyone how looking back at her actions helped them find the leaf.
