Eliza’s Library Parcel
School Readers · Level 16
Eliza and Bethany help Mrs Cole sort the school library returns. On the trolley they find a small paper parcel with a torn label. They can read only the first part of a classroom name, so they do not know where to deliver it.

Bethany suggests taking it to the nearest classroom, whose name starts with the same letter. Eliza wonders whether another class might share that letter. They leave the parcel on the worktable and ask Mrs Cole before carrying it away.

Mrs Cole checks the delivery list, which shows two classes waiting for parcels today. One has ordered a book about garden birds. The other is borrowing a puppet-story collection for a performance they are preparing.

With Mrs Cole beside them, the girls open the loose paper wrapping carefully. Inside is a book showing a rabbit puppet on its cover. There is also a folded note, tucked safely between the book and a piece of card.

Eliza reads the note with Mrs Cole. It gives the full classroom name and asks for the book to be returned after the puppet show. The note and cover agree, giving them two clues instead of just the damaged label.

They wrap the book again and attach a clear new label with Mrs Cole’s help. Bethany writes the classroom name while Eliza checks it against the note, making sure that no part is missing this time.

Mrs Cole walks with them to the correct classroom, where children are practising beside a small stage. Their teacher is delighted to see the story collection. She shows the girls a rabbit puppet that looks like the one on the cover.

Back in the library, Eliza puts the torn label in the recycling and helps finish the returns. “We nearly chose the closest room,” Bethany says. Eliza is glad they asked a question and found enough clues to make the right delivery.
