Emily’s Lunch Box
Shared Reading Books · Social Stories · Ages 3–4
Emily opens her lunch box. There is a sandwich she knows, some cucumber and a little mandarin. Noah opens his box beside her. His lunch looks different.

“What is that?” Noah asks, pointing to the mandarin. Emily looks at it. She has seen one before, but today she is not sure about eating it.

Ms Brook sits with them. “You can choose what to eat,” she says. Emily starts with her familiar sandwich. Nobody needs to taste the same food as someone else.

Emily touches the mandarin’s bumpy skin. “Can you open it?” she asks. Ms Brook helps. The pieces sit in a small container beside the rest of her lunch.

Emily smells a piece, then puts it down. That is enough exploring for now. She eats some cucumber and has a drink. Noah tells her about his morning.

After lunch, Emily closes her box. She feels comfortable with her choices. Some days she may try a new food. Today she looked and smelled, and that was her choice.
