Ethan’s Team Badges
Shared Reading Books · Technology · Year 2
Ethan’s class is playing a team trail game. Miss Brown gives everyone a large blue badge. Half have a small tree drawn on them; half have a small leaf. Ethan joins the tree team beside the playground bench.

From close up, he can see his own picture. Across the playground, the tiny drawings are harder to tell apart. He waves to a friend who seems to be on his team, then discovers she has a leaf badge instead.

Miss Brown pauses the game so they can talk. “The pictures look alike when we are far away,” Ethan says. His friend agrees. They need a way to recognise their teams without walking right up to every badge.

Back at the outdoor table, Ethan draws a large circle on scrap card. His friend draws a large triangle. They cover most of the badge space with each bold shape. “These look more different,” Ethan says, holding the cards beside each other.

Miss Brown cuts large circle and triangle badges from the same blue card. She helps attach them with chunky clips. Now the outside shape is different too. Ethan checks that the badge sits flat and does not fold behind his sleeve.

They try the badges near the bench and then from farther across the playground. Ethan points out the circle team correctly. His friend spots the triangles. They swap places and check again, keeping the badges facing the people who need to see them.

The trail game starts again. Ethan finds his circle teammates without stopping at every person. When a badge turns sideways, he helps his friend straighten it. Miss Brown asks what made the new design easier to use.

“A big clear shape,” Ethan answers. “I can see the circles from across the playground.” After the game, they put the reusable badges in separate trays. The next class can choose circles and triangles too, with the clips ready beside them.
