Florence’s Budget Choice
Shared Reading Books · Social Stories · Ages 13–18
Florence has saved some money for a jacket. She and Ruby visit the shops with Aunt Jo nearby. A green jacket fits comfortably, but its price is higher than Florence planned. Ruby points to a matching bag. Together, they would cost almost all of Florence’s savings.

Florence holds the jacket while Ruby talks about wearing their new clothes on Saturday. She wants to join the excitement. She also needs money for other things this month. Thinking about the total while someone waits for an answer makes it harder to decide.

“I need time to check,” Florence says. She asks the shop assistant whether she can put the jacket back while she thinks. Aunt Jo joins her at a quiet table nearby. Florence keeps her money details private as they compare the price with the budget she made at home.

The budget includes travel money and an amount she wants to keep. Aunt Jo helps with the calculation but does not choose for her. Florence could wait, look elsewhere or buy the jacket without the bag. They check that any choice leaves the money she needs for her plans.

Florence decides to wait until another day. She tells Ruby, “It costs more than I want to spend now.” She does not need to explain every part of her savings. Ruby puts the bag back, and they choose to continue their walk without buying clothes.

Florence feels pleased that she gave herself time. She still likes the green jacket. Liking something does not mean she must buy it today. A pause, a private budget check and help with the numbers made room for her own decision.
