Florence’s Parcel
School Readers · Level 16
Florence and Martin are helping the school office before an art workshop. Mrs Dean gives them a parcel marked Art Room and asks them to check where it belongs. The main art room is nearby, so Florence expects this to be a very short job.

At the art room door, the teacher looks at the delivery slip. “This is for the workshop in the annexe,” she says. Florence has never taken a parcel there before. Martin remembers seeing a room sign beyond the library, but he is not sure which door it was.

They return to Mrs Dean instead of leaving the parcel beside a door. She shows them a school plan with both art spaces marked. The annexe is a separate room used for larger projects. Florence traces the route on the plan while Martin holds the parcel steady.

Near the library, they find two doors with similar signs. One says Art Store, and the other leads to the annexe corridor. Florence nearly turns into the store, then stops to check the room name on the delivery slip. A familiar word is not the whole address.

They follow the corridor and find the workshop teacher setting out tables. He checks the slip before accepting the parcel. Inside are the large paper sheets his class has been waiting for. Florence is glad they did not leave the box in the first art room they found.

The teacher asks whether they can take a small reply back to the office. Martin puts the note in a separate folder so it will not get lost among their other papers. Florence marks their return route on the school plan. This time, they know which way to go.

Back at reception, Mrs Dean reads the note and ticks the delivery off her list. “What helped you find the right place?” she asks. Florence looks at the slip. “Checking the whole room name,” she says. Martin adds that asking for a plan helped more than guessing.

Before the workshop starts, Florence sees the large paper spread across the annexe tables. Students are already planning their pictures. Delivering a box had seemed like a small task, but getting it to the right people made a difference. She and Martin are ready for their next office job.
