Florence’s Rainy Fair
Shared Reading Books · Social Science · Year 2
Florence had helped make picture signs for the school fair. There would be books, plants and a place to share cakes. On the morning of the fair, rain tapped against the window. The playground tables were wet.

“Will nobody come now?” Florence asked Mum. At school, Mr Hart explained a new plan. Adults could move the fair into the hall. Before moving anything, they checked how to keep the entrances and walking routes clear.

The helpers divided the jobs. Adults moved tables and carried heavy trays. Florence and two friends helped with light picture signs. Mrs Moss counted the plant pots. Different jobs made it possible to change the plan together.

One sign still pointed towards the playground. Florence noticed a family looking the wrong way. With Mr Hart, she moved the sign to the correct doorway. A useful message needed to match what was happening now, not only yesterday’s plan.

Inside the hall, the book table and plant table were ready. There was less room than outside, so the helpers left a wide route between them. They checked the space again after visitors began arriving, rather than assuming the first arrangement would work.

An older visitor asked where to sit. Florence showed Mum, who helped find a chair in a clear space. The fair needed more than things to sell. People also needed information, room to move and places to rest.

Soon, neighbours were chatting beside the books. Children compared seedlings, and the rain continued outside. Florence’s signs helped people find the fair. She was pleased that her small job had supported the work of the whole group.

At the end, the helpers thanked one another and tidied the hall. Florence took home a picture of their rainy fair. The day had changed, but people had still found ways to meet, help and enjoy a shared event.
