Francis’s Bike Bell
School Readers · Level 7
Francis and Wendy get ready for cycle practice. Francis checks his blue bike while it stands beside the fence.

He presses the little bell lever with his thumb. There is a dull tap, but no clear ring.

Wendy looks closely at the handlebar. The edge of a thick strap rests against the side of the bell.

“That may stop it ringing,” she says. Francis asks the instructor to check before they move anything.

The instructor steadies the bike. Francis moves the bag strap away and fastens it clear of the bell.

He presses the lever again. A bright ring sounds across the yard, and Wendy nods beside him.

They check the strap one more time. It stays firm and does not slip back against the metal.

With the instructor, they finish the rest of the bike checks. Now Francis is ready to begin his practice.
