Freya’s Family Soup
Shared Reading Books · Social Science · Year 1
Freya finds a notebook in Gran’s kitchen. It has faded pictures of carrots, potatoes and peas. “Is this a shopping book?” she asks. “It is our family soup recipe,” says Gran.

Gran remembers making the soup with her dad when she was small. “He drew the pictures so I could help,” she says. Freya turns the pages carefully.

“Could we make it together?” Freya asks. Gran nods. They look at the ingredients on the table. Freya washes the cool vegetables while Gran prepares the tools.

Gran cuts the vegetables. Then she puts them in the pot and does the cooking. Freya watches from a safe place at the table. “Your dad did that part too?” she asks.

“He did,” says Gran. “Some parts stay the same. But families can change recipes.” She shows Freya a newer picture of peas added beside the old drawings.

Freya likes the green peas. She draws a bright picture of them on a new page. “Now I have helped with our notebook,” she says. Gran adds the date beside it.

When the soup has cooled enough, Gran serves it at the garden table. Freya tastes a spoonful. “It is warm and sweet. I can taste the carrots!”

They take a photo of the soup and the notebook together. “One day I can tell someone about making this with you,” says Freya. Gran smiles. “And you may add your own ideas.”
