Gareth’s Trail Clue
School Readers · Level 14
Gareth and Vinny follow a picture trail through the school woods with their teacher. A small card waits at each stopping place. It shows something to look for before choosing where to go next.

Their new clue shows a bridge with a rough tree trunk beside it. Two paths leave the clearing. Gareth remembers seeing a wooden crossing along each path.

Vinny points towards the nearest bridge, but Gareth looks at the picture again. The tree there is smooth and pale. The clue shows dark bark with deep lines.

The teacher asks them to compare the whole picture, not only one part. They stay together and follow the other marked path. They look for the bridge and the matching tree.

Beyond a bend, they find a low bridge beside a dark, rough trunk. Vinny holds the picture where both can see it. The crossing matches the clue too.

A small wooden box waits beyond the bridge over the dry ditch. The next picture card is inside. It shows the picnic bench where the rest of their group will meet.

The boys explain their choice at the bench with their teacher. Gareth points out why a bridge alone was not enough. They needed the tree detail to choose the right path.

They place their cards back in the trail bag before returning to school. “Two details helped us choose,” says Vinny, remembering the rough bark as well as the wooden crossing.
