George’s Sand Scoop
Shared Reading Books · Technology · Ages 3–4
George is making a sand hill for his digger. Dad sits beside the sand tray. “I need lots of sand over here,” says George.

George picks up damp sand with his hands. Some falls between his fingers. He makes a little pile, but the hill is still very low.

He tries a small spoon. It carries a little sand at a time. George looks at the hill. “This is taking a long time.”

Dad puts a broad scoop beside him. It has a deep bowl and a short handle. George feels the handle. “I can hold this.”

George pushes the scoop into the damp sand. He lifts it carefully. The bowl holds a bigger load. He tips the sand onto his hill.

He fills the scoop again. Sand slides out when he turns it over. His hill grows. “This tool helps me,” George says.

George pats the top flat with his hand. Now his digger can stand there. He moves it slowly along the sandy top. Dad watches.

“My hill is ready,” says George. He puts the scoop beside the tray. Then the digger starts work, making a little road down the side.
