Harry’s Shape Train
Shared Reading Books · Numeracy · Ages 3–4
Harry wants a train for his picture. He has a box of big shapes. “What could make the wheels?” asks Ms Hill. Harry looks carefully.

He picks a blue circle. Its edge is curved all the way round. “No corners,” says Harry, moving his finger around the edge.

Harry finds another circle. He puts the two circles below his train. “Round wheels!” he says. Ms Hill helps him leave room for the body.

He chooses a green rectangle for the body. It has four straight sides and four corners. Two sides are long and two are short.

The roof is missing. Harry tries a red triangle. He points to its three corners. “A little roof!” he says. It fits on his picture.

Ms Hill turns a spare triangle around. “Is it still a triangle?” Harry looks at its three sides. “Yes!” Turning it does not change its shape.

Harry checks his train picture: a rectangle body, circle wheels and a triangle roof. The pieces stay flat on the table while he puts them together.

Then Harry rolls a toy train past his picture. “My shapes made a train,” he says. Ms Hill smiles. Harry wonders what picture he could build next.
