Hazel’s Picnic Visitor
School Readers · Level 8
Hazel and Leon eat lunch at a park table with their class. A small robin lands on the fence beside their bags.

Hazel stops talking to watch the bird. It tilts its head and looks at a few crumbs beside Leon’s open lunch box.

Leon lifts a piece of bread towards it. Their teacher quietly explains that the bird can find its own food in the park.

He puts the bread back in his box and closes the lid. Hazel gathers the crumbs so the table is clean again.

The robin hops down onto the grass. Hazel and Leon stay at the table and give it plenty of room to move.

For a moment, it stands very still. Then it pulls a tiny worm from the soft ground beside a fallen leaf.

“It found its own lunch,” Hazel says softly. Leon watches without moving closer, and the robin carries the worm towards the hedge.

The friends pack their boxes and leave no scraps behind. Their unexpected visitor has given them something new to talk about on the walk back.
