Helen’s Repair Visit
Shared Reading Books · Social Stories · Ages 19+
Helen has reported a dripping kitchen tap. A repair visit is arranged for Tuesday morning. She knows the time window, but not exactly when the worker will arrive. Beth, her housing support worker, helps her write down the plan. Helen chooses to have Beth present for the visit.

On Tuesday, Helen keeps looking towards the door. She had planned to draw at the kitchen table, but waiting makes it hard to begin. Beth asks what information would help. Helen wants to know who is coming and whether she can stay in another room during the repair.

They contact the housing office using the number Helen already has. The office confirms the worker’s name and explains the job. Beth writes down the details with Helen. They leave a clear path to the tap. Helen decides to draw in the sitting room, with Beth answering the door beside her.

When the worker arrives, they check the visit details through their agreed process before allowing the work to begin. Mr Grant explains what he will do. Helen asks him to tell her before turning off the water. She can ask questions or request a pause if something is unclear.

Beth stays while Helen draws in the next room. When the repair is finished, Mr Grant shows them the tap and explains what has changed. Helen tries it with him nearby. They ask where to report another problem before he packs away his tools.

Helen feels more comfortable about the visit. She had choices about company, information and where to wait. She did not have to manage an unfamiliar visitor alone. Keeping the plan clear helped her make space for the repair and for her own morning.
