Holly’s Sock Match
Shared Reading Books · Numeracy · Ages 3–4
Holly is helping Grandma with the washing. The basket has socks inside. “Let’s find the ones that go together,” says Grandma.

Holly puts a red sock on the bench. Beside it she puts a blue sock. “These are different colours,” she says. Grandma looks with her.

Holly finds another red sock. She puts it beside the first red sock. They are the same size and colour. “These two match!”

The red socks make a pair. The blue sock is on its own. “Where is its partner?” asks Holly. They look in the basket.

The basket has no more socks. Grandma spots a little bit of blue beneath the bench. Holly bends down to look, with Grandma beside her.

There is the missing sock! Holly brings it to the bench. She puts it beside the lonely blue sock. “Blue with blue,” she says.

Now there are two pairs: red with red, and blue with blue. Holly checks the size and colour. Every sock has a matching partner.

They hang the pairs on the line. “Two red socks and two blue socks,” says Grandma. Holly smiles. The washing job is finished, and no sock is alone.
