Hugh’s Kite Tail
School Readers · Level 13
Hugh and Denis bring a red kite to the wide park field with Mum. They choose an open place with room to play. They lay the kite and its blue tail on the grass.

When Mum helps Hugh lift it, the kite twists and drops back down. Denis holds the reel still while Hugh checks that the line has not caught around his shoes.

They try once more with the same result. The breeze feels steady. Mum notices the long blue tail curled into a thick knot. It is close to the kite’s lower point.

The boys put the kite flat on the grass and spread out the tail. Denis holds one loose end while Hugh gently works the fabric free. They take care not to tighten the knot.

Soon the blue strip lies straight behind the red diamond again. Mum helps them check the line and tail. Then they return to their open launching place in the field.

This time the kite rises above them. Its tail follows in a long curve. Hugh holds the reel while Denis watches the blue fabric. It moves freely instead of bunching close to the kite.

They take turns holding the reel. They keep the line clear of each other. When the breeze weakens, Mum helps bring the kite down. They do not chase it across the field.

Before going home, they wind up the line and fold the tail loosely beside the kite. “A small knot made a big difference,” says Hugh, remembering to check it before their next flight.
