Irene’s Sports Day Flag
School Readers · Level 6
Irene and Hugh help set out a course. A blue flag marks the last turn on the grass.

Irene stands the flag beside a low bush. The blue cloth hangs still against the green leaves.

Hugh walks back along the course. From the first cone, he cannot see the flag behind the bush.

“It is too low here,” he calls. Irene lifts the short pole, but she cannot hold it all day.

Mr Dale brings a firm flag stand. They choose an open patch beside the last cone.

Irene puts the pole in the heavy stand. The blue cloth can now move freely in the wind.

Hugh checks the course from the first cone again. This time, he can see the bright blue flag.

Irene walks around the stand to check the space. There is a clear path for people to pass.

The friends are ready for sports day. The flag shows everyone where the course turns.
