Jane’s Pond Watch
School Readers · Level 9
Jane and Anne join their class for a quiet pond watch. Their teacher asks them to notice something small near the water.

Jane spots a blue dragonfly resting on a reed. Its thin wings shine while it stays still in the sunshine.

“Look over there!” Jane calls, and the dragonfly flies away. She feels disappointed because Anne did not have time to see it.

Their teacher suggests waiting quietly by the rail. “Sometimes we notice more when we give animals space,” she says.

The girls stand back and watch the reeds without calling out. After a little while, the blue dragonfly returns to a leaf.

Jane points gently, and Anne follows her finger. Now they both see the wings, the long body and the tiny legs.

They draw what they noticed in their green notebook. Jane adds a blue body, while Anne draws the clear wings.

Before leaving, they show the drawing to their teacher. “We saw much more when we waited,” says Jane, smiling at Anne.
