Judith’s Sand Tunnel
School Readers · Level 10
Judith and Irene make a little road through the sand at the beach. They decide to add a tunnel so their yellow toy car can travel beneath a mound.

Irene scoops out an opening with a small blue spade. Judith sends the car towards it. The roof is too low, and the car stops at the entrance.

“We need more space above it,” says Judith. She holds the car beside the opening. Mum suggests using the car to check the tunnel’s size before they try again.

The girls carefully scrape sand from inside the roof. They work slowly from both ends. They leave the outside of the mound thick enough to stay together.

Irene looks through the tunnel. Judith places the car at the entrance. Now there is a little gap above its roof. Judith gives it a gentle push.

The yellow car rolls through and comes out beside Irene’s hand. She sends it back, and both girls laugh when it appears on Judith’s side again.

They make a wider road leading away from each end of the tunnel. Mum brings a few small stones. The girls put them safely along the sides as pretend walls.

Before leaving, they collect the toy car and spade. They flatten their small sand road. Judith remembers how checking the space helped. They made a tunnel that their car could use.
