Kevin’s Missing Flask
School Readers · Level 10
Kevin and Keith walk to the hilltop picnic spot with Mum. They carry lunch in a green bag, and Kevin brings an orange flask filled with cool water.

At the bench, Kevin reaches into the lunch bag for his flask. Sandwiches and apples are inside. The orange bottle is not where he expects it.

Keith checks beside the bench. Kevin looks along the path they have just walked. Mum asks them to stay nearby. She asks them to think about what they carried up the hill.

Kevin remembers that the flask would not fit beside the sandwiches. “I put it somewhere else before we started,” he says. He looks at Mum’s dark blue backpack.

Keith spots a round orange top sticking out of the backpack’s side pocket. Kevin lifts out the flask and checks that its lid is still fastened tightly.

Mum pours water into their cups while the boys unpack their lunch. They sit together on the bench and look across the fields below the picnic spot.

Before they set off again, Kevin returns the flask to the same side pocket. He tells Keith where it is. Now both boys will know where to find it at their next stop.

They walk home with their bags packed neatly and the path clear behind them. “Remembering helped,” says Kevin, “and now our team knows where the water is.”
