Laura’s Treasure Box
School Readers · Level 13
Laura hides a small treasure box for Shirley’s garden game. Dad helps arrange the clues. Three picture cards lead from the apple tree to the bench. Then they lead towards the flower bed beside it.

Shirley finds the apple picture and reaches the tree without help. The next card has slipped from its place. Laura cannot see it among the fallen leaves near the trunk.

They look carefully without moving every leaf in the garden. Dad asks Laura where she put the card. He also asks what might have moved it after she left.

Laura remembers resting it on a low branch beside the path. Shirley notices a light card corner between two roots. It is just below where Laura left it.

They lift the bench picture from the roots and return to the game. Shirley follows it to the seat. The final flower picture points to the nearby bed, not a distant tree.

Beside the flower bed, Shirley kneels and sees the box beneath the bench. Laura opens it with her. Three smooth counters shine red, blue and green in the sunlight.

Dad asks Shirley to tell the route using the pictures in their proper order. Laura suggests putting the cards flat on the table next time. There, the breeze cannot easily dislodge them.

They swap jobs after putting the counters back inside the box. This time Shirley makes the trail, while Laura waits for her turn to discover where the treasure has gone.
