Lily’s Long Shadow
Shared Reading Books · Science · Ages 3–4Written by Emily Parker · Illustrated by Oliver Bennett

Lily walks on the path in the morning. A long, dark shape walks too.

“Look down,” says Grandad. “That is your shadow.” Lily looks at its long legs.

Lily lifts one hand. Her shadow lifts a hand too. “Hello, shadow!”

Lily stands still. Her shadow is still. Then she moves. It moves too.

“Your body blocks the sunlight,” says Grandad. “That makes the dark shape.” Lily looks down again.

A cloud passes in front of the sun. The shadow is hard to see. “Where did it go?” asks Lily.

The cloud moves on. Bright light reaches the path again. Lily sees her shadow.

Later, they look in the same place. The shadow is shorter now. “You changed!” says Lily.
