Lucy’s Water Bucket
Shared Reading Books · Numeracy · Ages 3–4
Lucy wants to make a sand mound with Grandpa. The sand is dry. “We need a little water,” he says. Lucy finds her small bucket.

Lucy looks inside. The bucket is empty. She tips it towards Grandpa. There is no water to pour onto the sand yet.

Grandpa helps Lucy pour in some water from a little jug. Now the bucket is not empty. “There is some,” says Lucy.

Another bucket stands beside it. Both buckets are the same size. One has a little water. The other has much more. Lucy looks at the fuller one.

Lucy adds one small cup of water to her bucket. The water level rises. “More water,” she says. Grandpa steadies the bucket while she pours.

“Stop there,” says Grandpa as the water nears the top. Lucy stops before it spills. The bucket is nearly full. There is only a little room left.

They pour some water onto the sand in a tray. The sand becomes damp. The bucket has less water now. Lucy watches the level go down.

Soon Lucy has a little sand mound. Her bucket is almost empty again. “We put water in. Then we poured some out!” she says. Grandpa helps her put the water things away.
