Matilda’s Quiet Song
Shared Reading Books · Arts · Year 1
Matilda hears a bird outside the classroom window. Its short call rises and falls. She hums a little answer while Ben looks up from his drawing beside her.

“That could be our garden song,” Matilda says. She tries to copy every bird sound. Her tune jumps so quickly that she loses her place and stops.

Ben hums just two soft notes. Matilda listens. He sings them again with a pause between. “I can remember that bit,” she says. She answers with the same little tune.

Ms Rose joins them. “What might your song say?” she asks. Matilda looks at the trees outside. She chooses four words: “Little bird, come back.” Ben taps the beat on his knee.

They try the words with their two-note tune. Some words hurry together. Matilda slows down and lets the last word last longer. Now there is room to hear the whole line.

Ben wants a quiet part with no words. He hums the tune while Matilda moves one hand gently up and down. They can share the song in different ways.

Matilda puts their parts in order: words first, humming next, then a pause. She looks at Ben before beginning. He gives a small nod to show he is ready.

They sing softly enough to hear one another. At the pause, the real bird calls again. Matilda smiles without rushing to answer. The bird can have a turn too.

Ms Rose asks whether they want to share the song with the class. Ben chooses to hum. Matilda sings the words, while anyone who wishes can follow her hand movement.

When the song ends, the room is still for a moment. Matilda looks at Ben. “It is a little song,” she says. “But there is space for all of us in it.”
