Millie’s Lunch Carrier
Shared Reading Books · Technology · Year 1
Millie and Dad are taking lunch to the garden table. Millie wants to carry the wrapped sandwiches herself. She finds a shallow box with handles. “This can be my carrier,” she says.

She puts the sandwiches inside and lifts the handles. The thin bottom bows down. A corner opens, and one wrapped sandwich slides onto the clean kitchen table. Millie sets the box down.

“The handles stayed on,” says Dad. “Where did it bend?” Millie points to the bottom. She touches the thin card. “This part needs help. It is not holding our lunch flat.”

They look through the clean craft materials. Dad offers a thick piece of card. Millie lays the carrier on it, and Dad draws around the base. Then he cuts a panel to fit.

Millie slides the panel into the bottom. It lies flat against the thin card. Dad closes the loose corner with strong paper tape. “Let’s try the same lunch again,” says Millie.

They put the wrapped sandwiches back in. Millie lifts the carrier just above the table. This time the base stays flat. Dad keeps his hands nearby while she lowers it again.

Millie carries the lunch slowly to the garden, holding both handles. Dad carries the drinks. At the table, she checks the sandwiches. Nothing has slipped out, and the base has stayed firm.

“It needed a stronger bottom,” says Millie. They unpack lunch and fold the empty carrier for another day. Millie keeps the stiff panel with it, ready for the next trip outside.
