Miriam’s Hilltop Echo
School Readers · Level 7
Miriam and Catherine walk along a hill path with Dad. They stop beside a wide rock face to rest.

Miriam calls, “Hello!” across the open space. A moment later, she hears “Hello!” come back.

She looks along the path, but nobody else is there. “Who said that?” she asks Dad.

Dad tells her that a sound can bounce back from rock. The sound she heard is called an echo.

Catherine calls, “Good morning!” and waits quietly. The same words come back a little fainter.

Now Miriam tries her own name. She smiles when the rock seems to answer her.

They take turns calling one short phrase, then listening. Dad asks them to leave a pause between each turn.

Soon they carry on along the path together. Miriam knows that their mystery voice was an echo.
