Nancy’s Lunch Invitation
Shared Reading Books · Social Stories · Ages 13–18
Nancy usually eats lunch with Peter at a small table. Today, Esther invites both of them to sit with a larger group. Peter agrees quickly. Nancy likes Esther, but several conversations at once can be hard to follow. She had been looking forward to a quieter lunch after a busy morning.

As the group moves towards the large table, Nancy remains by the doorway with her lunch. She worries that choosing somewhere else will seem unfriendly. Ms Kent notices and asks quietly whether Nancy wants company, help with a plan or a moment on her own. Nancy asks to talk.

Nancy explains that she wants friendship and a calmer space. Ms Kent helps her think of words that describe her need without criticising the group. Nancy could join briefly, use the courtyard table or arrange to see her friends later. She chooses the courtyard, which is open and supervised today.

Nancy tells Peter and Esther, “I need somewhere quieter today. I can see you after lunch.” Esther asks if she may sit outside too. Nancy says yes, while Peter chooses the larger group. They do not all have to make the same choice to remain friends.

In the courtyard, Nancy and Esther eat with plenty of space around their table. Nancy feels able to ask about Esther’s art project. After lunch, Peter meets them by the classroom. He tells them a little about his lunch, without asking Nancy to defend her choice.

Nancy feels comfortable with the arrangement they made. Tomorrow she may choose differently. A lunch invitation gives her an option; it is not a test of friendship. She can value other people and still ask for the space that helps her through the day.
