Natasha’s New Partner
School Readers · Level 18
Natasha likes making models with Jude because they usually understand each other’s ideas. Today Mrs Green asks the class to build houses with a new partner first, then join another pair to make a street. Natasha worries that someone different might spoil the plan she has already imagined.

Her new partner, Ben, places a tall cardboard tube beside a small box. Natasha had planned a low house with a garden. She starts moving his tube away, then notices his disappointed face. He has not heard her idea, and she has not asked about his.

Mrs Green sits beside them and suggests that each person explain one important feature. Natasha describes a garden big enough for a vegetable patch. Ben explains that his tube is a lookout tower, not a chimney. He wants the model family to see the whole pretend street.

They draw two quick sketches on scrap paper. Natasha realises that a garden could grow beside a tower if the base is wide enough. Ben agrees to keep an open space at the front. Neither drawing becomes the final plan on its own, but both help them choose.

Jude and her partner bring their model over when the first building time ends. They have made a small shop with a wide doorway. Natasha is surprised that Jude’s new partner has added something she would not have thought of. Their street already looks less ordinary than she expected.

The four children arrange the buildings on one large sheet of card. At first the tower blocks the shop doorway from view. Ben suggests moving his building farther back, while Natasha marks a path around the vegetable patch. They check that each doorway has a clear route to the street.

When the class visits the finished models, Natasha explains which ideas came from each person. Jude points out the lookout tower and the garden, and Ben shows how people can reach the shop. The model works because the children listened to each other and built carefully.

At tidy-up time, Natasha saves their two rough sketches beside the finished street. She still enjoys working with Jude, but she is glad they tried a different arrangement today. “I nearly moved the best new idea away,” she says, looking up at Ben’s small cardboard tower.
