Oscar’s Car Wash
School Readers · Level 15
Oscar and Naomi are helping at the school car wash. They are raising money for a class trip. Mr West has marked a safe work area in the car park. Mrs Green parks her silver car, switches off the engine and keeps the keys.

Oscar takes a clean sponge from the wash bucket. Naomi gets the drying cloths ready. They work with Mr West, cleaning one part at a time. Soon the car looks much better, and Oscar is pleased with the bright silver doors.

When the first side is dry, Naomi steps back to look. A pale streak runs across one window. Oscar wipes it again with the same cloth, but the streak grows wider. “I am making it worse,” he says. They stop and check the cloth.

The cloth is damp with soapy water. It came from the washing pile, not the clean drying pile. Mr West gives them fresh cloths. Naomi puts the clean ones in a separate basket, away from the buckets and used sponges.

Oscar dries the window with a fresh cloth. This time, he can see through it clearly. Naomi checks the other windows while he works. They leave the driver's place clear and do not move the car. Mrs Green is waiting beside Mr West.

Before they say the job is finished, Naomi walks around the car with Oscar. They spot a muddy patch low on the last door. It was hidden from the side where they had been standing. They ask Mr West to help them clean that part.

At last, Mrs Green checks the car. The windows are clear, and the muddy patch has gone. She thanks the team and makes a donation. Oscar puts the used cloths in the washing tub, leaving the clean basket ready for the next car.

Naomi ticks the car off their list. “A quick wipe was not enough,” Oscar says. “We had to stop and look.” Their next customer is waiting beyond the work area. Mr West will guide the next car in when the space is clear.
