Penny’s Fair Share
Shared Reading Books · Numeracy · Ages 3–4
Penny and Sam are having a pretend picnic. Mrs Reed gives them four big wooden biscuits. Two plates are waiting. “Can we share them?” asks Penny.

Penny puts one biscuit on her plate and one on Sam’s. Two biscuits are still in the middle. “One for you, one for me,” she says.

She gives another biscuit to her own plate. Now her plate has two. Sam’s has one. One biscuit is still waiting in the middle.

Penny puts the last biscuit on Sam’s plate. Now each plate has two. There are no biscuits left in the middle. Sam smiles.

Mrs Reed asks them to look. Penny points slowly. “One, two here. One, two there.” Both plates have the same number. “A fair share!” says Sam.

Then Penny moves one of Sam’s biscuits to her plate. Her plate has three and Sam’s has one. “Are they still the same?” asks Mrs Reed.

Penny checks again. “Mine has more. Sam’s has less.” She puts one back. Now there are two on each plate again. “The same!”

Their pretend picnic is ready. Penny and Sam each have two biscuits. “One at a time helped us share,” says Penny. Mrs Reed sits beside them for the game.
