Penny’s River Map
School Readers · Level 8
Penny and Desmond follow a river path with their class. Penny holds the map while Desmond looks for the next turning.

Two paths meet beside a tall tree. One follows the river, and the other climbs gently away between the bushes.

A drop of rain falls on the map. Penny wipes it with her sleeve, but the little arrow becomes a blue blur.

“Let us stop here,” says Desmond. They tell their teacher about the map instead of choosing a path without checking.

Their teacher asks what else the map shows. Penny points to a stone bridge drawn beside the river, beyond the next bend.

Desmond looks along the lower path. Through a gap in the trees, he can see the same low bridge over the river.

The teacher checks the route before the class moves on. Penny folds the damp part of the map inside to keep it safe.

Soon they reach the stone bridge together. A blurred arrow made them stop, but the bridge helped them find their way.
