Peter’s Unexpected Buzz
Shared Reading Books · Social Stories · Ages 5–8
Peter is sorting leaf pictures with Grace when a sharp buzzing starts outside. A worker is repairing a gate beyond the classroom window. Peter had not expected the sound. He presses his hands over his ears.

Ms Lane notices and comes close enough for Peter to see her. She uses a quiet voice. “That sound surprised you.” Peter nods. He cannot think about the leaf pictures while the buzzing fills his attention.

Ms Lane offers the quieter reading room. Grace can carry their pictures if Peter wants her company. Peter points to the doorway and says, “There.” They move away from the window, and the sound becomes less sharp.

In the reading room, Peter sits near the open door with Ms Lane nearby. He can rest, use his familiar ear defenders or look at a book. He chooses a rest first. Grace leaves the leaf pictures on a low table.

Ms Lane checks with the office about the work. She tells Peter what she has learned: the worker will take a break soon, but may begin again later. Together they decide how she will let him know before another loud part.

Peter feels more comfortable with a quieter place and a clearer plan. He chooses one leaf picture to show Grace. He may return to the classroom later, or keep working here with support while the repair continues.
