Ralph’s Film Scene
School Readers · Level 9
Ralph and Celia make a short film in the school garden. Celia sets a tablet on its stand while Ralph gets ready to speak beside the wooden bench.

Ralph begins his first line just as a loud buzzing sound starts beyond the hedge. Someone is cutting the grass on the far side of the garden.

Celia stops the film and plays the short clip back. Ralph’s mouth is moving, but the mower is much louder than the words he is saying.

“We could shout,” Ralph suggests, then shakes his head. The teacher asks whether waiting might work better than trying to speak over the noisy machine.

They leave the tablet in place and practise the scene without recording. Celia checks that Ralph’s face and hands fit comfortably inside the picture.

After a few minutes, the buzzing stops. They listen for a moment, and this time they can hear birds in the hedge and leaves moving in the breeze.

Celia starts a new clip, and Ralph speaks in his usual voice. His words sound clear when they play it back, with the quiet garden behind them.

They save the new clip for their class film. Ralph is glad he waited instead of shouting; the scene now sounds as calm as the garden looks.
