Roger’s Fishing Float
School Readers · Level 12
Roger and Graham join Dad for a quiet fishing trip on the lake. They sit securely in the boat with their lifejackets fastened. Dad helps check their small rods.

Roger lowers his red float, but it hangs above the water. Dad notices the line twisted around the rod tip. Roger stops pulling.

Graham rests his rod across his knees and watches from his seat. Dad asks Roger to bring the tip closer for a check. Roger must not stand up or lean over the side.

Together they gently unwind the line and let the float hang free. Roger keeps his hands still. Dad checks that the loose line runs through the rod’s small guide again.

This time the red float reaches the water beside the boat. Graham lowers his blue float too. He leaves space between their lines so they do not cross.

The boys wait quietly and watch the floats move with the gentle ripples. Roger tells Dad how the hanging float helped. It reminded him to check before pulling harder.

A fish makes a small splash farther across the lake. Their floats stay still. They have not caught anything yet. They still enjoy watching the water and talking about the reeds.

Dad helps them lift their lines and pack the rods before they return to shore. “Our trip was still interesting,” says Roger, “and stopping to check kept our lines ready to use.”
